MIAMI, FL (WCMH) — Some parents are speaking out after a popular first grade teacher was fired after she posted pictures of her same-sex wedding on social media.

Jocelyn Morffi taught first grade at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Miami for seven years. Last weekend, she married her girlfriend and posted pictures of the ceremony to Facebook. On Thursday, Morffi was fired.

In a letter to parents, Principal Carlota Morales called it a “difficult and necessary” decision. Nearly a dozen parents who had children in Morffi’s class came to the school to protest her firing. The parents called her a “great teacher” and said they were aware that she is openly gay and that it made no difference.

“I’m upset,” parent Christina Lopez told WPLG. “The way they handled this was just unbelievable.”

“What she does at home, that’s none of our concern,” said Ricardo Oviedo, another parent of a child in Morffi’s class. “The fact is, she maintained a high moral standard at school and was inscribing in our kids a sense of community and love.”

Several parents said after meeting with the school administration, they still don’t have a satisfactory explanation for why Morffi was fired.

“You know, to be a Catholic, you’re taught to be forgiving. But if you’re gay, forget about it,” said parent Cynthia Cini. “But love is love.”

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Miami told WPLG Morffi “broke the contract she signed when she began teaching at a Catholic school.” Her contract contained a moral turpitude clause.

Morffi’s attorney told WPLG they are considering the next legal steps they can take.

Morffi posted a brief statement to Facebook on Friday addressing the issue:

“This weekend, I married the love of my life and, unfortunately, I was terminated from my job as a result. In their eyes, I’m not the right kind of Catholic for my choice of partner. “

The great Greek historian Herodotus (484-426 BC) describes in his work Histories of the Persian Wars in a sideline, the touching story of the Ring of Polycrates.

The ring of Polykrates

Polykrates was tyrant and sole ruler of the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea in the 6th century BC. All his undertakings were successful, and he was considered the luckiest man on earth. So that the gods would not be jealous of him, he wanted to do himself a misfortune.

On a boat trip, he threw his extraordinarily beautiful, beloved golden ring into the sea and actually felt mourning. A little later two fishermen caught a big golden fish and brought it as a gift to the tyrant Polycrates. Great was the surprise when the golden ring of the ruler came to light when the fish was gutted.

Polycrates wept a lot, because he knew: The gods will eventually take revenge for this incredible luck.

A little later, Polycrates was fraudulently lured by the Persians to the mainland and died a cruel death.

The ring of Godfried Danneels

Just as unbelievable but completely real is the history of the bishop's ring of Cardinal Danneels.

The story began on a midsummer Monday afternoon in 1981 in the archiepiscopal city of Mechelen in Belgium. A very pale and slender young man, somewhat neglected, entered a jewelery shop and asked if one could not appraise the ring he had brought.

As a specialist, the jeweler immediately recognized what he was shown, agreed and took the ring to the back room for inspection:

It was the bishop's ring of his Archbishop Godfried Danneels, who had been appointed Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels and Primate of Belgium in 1977.

Immediately the police were alerted by Mechelen, who had no idea about this. The archdiocesan office had filed neither a loss report nor a burglary or theft.

The police notified the archbishop's secretary, who was very friendly, grateful and courteous, but at the same time well-connected with the circumstances of the apparent loss.

The mysterious case

Later, somewhere in the archiepiscopal palace, a window was found. Godfried Danneels testified that he had heard some noise and had glimpsed two shadowy figures fleeing. The two elderly religious women who also lived in the palace had neither seen nor heard anything.

Nothing was missing except the ring.

According to the cardinal and his direct collaborators, the bishop ring was always on the archbishop's desk. Its disappearance had not been noticed.

Why the lack of one of the most important insignia and pontificals of a bishop1) could go unnoticed for at least several days, and this despite a daily obligation to test remained an open question.

The pale youth was also not very informative.

A very mysterious case with many inconsistencies.

Forgiven and (almost) forgotten

The archdiocese, evidently very happy that the lost piece was back, practiced generous misericordia and wanted to forgive and forget everything and not cause a fuss.

But that was hardly possible. By now too many people knew about this curious case. Even more annoying was that Danneels, already noticed by other peculiarities and strange contacts and always dealing with sexual issues again, got into a spicy situation.

Danneeel's friends, who defiantly defended the archbishop, came up with the really stupid idea of ​​linking the mysterious emergence of the Archbishop's episcopal ring to a theft story that was belatedly but extensively passed on to the press and spread internationally.

In the following decades of ecclesiastical destruction and cover-up of ecclesiastical and episcopal scandals, the Belgian media were almost completely mainstreamed and above criticism

Of course, that did not work internationally and later with the new media. Paradoxically, it was precisely the press campaign directed by the archdiocese that documented this mysterious Ring story.

The Dutch newspaper Leidse Courant (fully archived on the internet) on Wednesday, July 22, 1981 reported on the theft. The ring had already reappeared then! Such an episode could not hide.

It is also mentioned briefly in the great Danneels biography, which was published in 2015 by his friend and admirer Jürgen Mettepenningen, a well-worn and now married ex-Benedictine monk.

By the way, the pale young man who cherished the ring never spoke again.

Theoretically, the offense should have been theft / burglary / stealing or participation in it. As Cardinal Danneels said over and over again, and probably until the bitter end (in the Danneels tapes with the abused nephew of his friend and pedophile Bishop of Bruges, Roger Vangheluwe) will say: "One must forgive and forget".

The fact that Francis received the eight-page letter, obtained by the AP, challenges his insistence that he has “zero tolerance” for sex abuse and cover-ups. It also calls into question his stated empathy with abuse survivors, compounding the most serious crisis of his five-year papacy.

The scandal exploded last month when Francis’ trip to South America was marred by protests over his vigorous defense of Bishop Juan Barros, who is accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring the abuse by the Rev. Fernando Karadima. During the trip, Francis callously dismissed accusations against Barros as “slander,” seemingly unaware that victims had placed Barros at the scene of Karadima’s crimes.

Twin Mexican Priests Gunned Down at Candlemas

MEXICO CITY (CNS) -- Two priests were gunned down as they returned from Candlemas celebrations in a corner of Mexico rife with drug cartel violence and increasingly lethal for prelates.

Fathers Ivan Anorve Jaimes and Germain Muniz Garcia were killed early Feb. 5 as they drove between the cities of Taxco and Iguala in Guerrero state, some 100 miles south of Mexico City. 

Guerrero state officials say an armed group blocked the priests' van and opened fire. The priests were traveling with four other passengers, all of whom were injured.

Germans Have Little Faith in the Catholic Church -- Pope's Popularity Declines

The pope said:

With these words, the Holy Pope Gregory the Great prepared the citizens of Rome in December 590 for Christmas. This is how many of the greatest shepherds spoke in the darkest ages of humanity. Their voice penetrates from a distance to us like the light of a distant star illuminating the darkness of the night, proclaiming in our hearts and in society, the birth of the Divine Savior.

Cardinal Maradiaga Financial Scandal: Pope Has Ordered Investigation

For the curia workers, because they had to anticipate, the new "gift" of a renewed chastisement from the Pope for Christmas. But also for Pope Francis, because on the same morning the weekly magazine L'Espresso (comparable to the Spiegel/Time Magazine) with a dossier of one of the closest pope confidants and personal friends, the Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, this was anything but good.

While Francis did in the Sala Clementina, that which the Curials had already feared - bludgeoning them for the fifth year in a row, talking about "traitors," "intrigues," "disloyalty," and "cancerous ulcers," was one of his own closest advisers in the spotlight of a "new scandal", as L'Espresso wrote.

The weekly magazine revealed that Cardinal Maradiaga, Archbishop of Tegucigalpa in Honduras, was president of Caritas International and co-ordinator of the C9 Cardinal Council wanted by Francis in Rome, to make extra payments to his official remuneration.

600,000 extra and the "disappeared" millions

Pope orders investigations - Cardinal Maradiaga not mentioned

It was also unequivocally implied that Pineda could hardly effect the money transfers without the knowledge of Cardinal Maradiaga. This was probably even done on his behalf. They are related to London financial services providers, including Leman Wealth Management. The millions were deposited in German banks. Part of the money should now be "gone".

According to Vatican spokesman Greg Burke, the Pope has given the order to go in search of the money.

Cardinal Maradiaga positioned himself last spring as a potential successor to Pope Francis. This should be, as much as can be foreseen at least now, no longer the case.
